Workday wordplay: Absence management and time tracking terms

Workday training begins in March 2025, but you can start learning some of the terms you’ll use to manage your own employment information, and your team’s if you are a supervisor. Absence management and time tracking will all take place in Workday.

Absence Management

The Absence App is where UW employees will access their Absence Home Page.

The Absence Home Page is where workers can navigate to their absence calendar, absence balances, or request a return from leave.

The Manage Absence Calendar is where you can request or correct time off or initiate a request for a leave of absence. You can see past and future time off requests and see absence balances in real time.

Leave Family is a set of similar leave of absence types. Leave of absence types are grouped by the Leave Family in the menu for employee self-service.

Time Tracking

Calendar-Based Time Entry uses the time entry calendar as the focal point for entering, editing, and submitting time.

Time Clock Event describes a worker’s actions, such as a check-in or check-out, on the web time clock or an external time clock.

Time Off is time taken away from work for vacation, sick, holidays, etc. that has eligibility rules and allowed time increments. If the time off is attached to a Time Off Plan that tracks a balance, the time off subtracts from that balance.

The Web Clock has Check In and Check Out buttons in a worker’s Time app in a web browser or Workday Mobile that allows them to clock in or out for a shift.

Work Schedule Calendar defines the days and hours that a worker is scheduled to work. All employees in Workday should have a basic work schedule that reflects expected regular weekly hours and workdays.
